"Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, 'Whom shall I send, and who
will go for us?' Then said I, 'Here am I; send me" Isaiah 6:8

Almost forty five years ago, a young English woman stepped off a boat into Hong Kong, in the far away country of China. It was Jackie Pullinger. She felt she had been sent there by God. Even though the people who usually sent missionaries to China felt she was too young, she went anyway.

In Hong Kong, she became a music and English teacher. On her first day of teaching, she was really shocked. It was not like any of the schools that Jackie had seen before. It was on a dirty street where people had no jobs.
In the school, pupils got bored just repeating what the teacher said over and over again. Well who wouldn't be? Ms Pullinger tried to introduce games and plays into the lesson but it was very hard. She soon felt God wanted her to do more work. She wanted to help the children and their suffering families.

Jackie did not want to be like some other missionaries. She realised God wanted her to minister salvation to the poor and rejected, the outcasts; those who no one wanted anymore. So she bought a house near those people and lived near them.

Many of them were very bad, drug addiction and robbery, street gangs, prostitution and child slavery were just a few of what confronted her. She tried to tell them that Jesus loved them. At first they were all surprised a "good" woman talking to loads of bad people telling them of someone who loved them even though they were bad. At first, they couldn't believe that anyone could love them and wanted them. So Jackie learnt their language and got to know them. She knew one thing: These people were the people that God had sent her to.

God gave Jackie a special gift: A mother's heart. Everyone looked up to her. She started a youth club and helped get many young ones off the street. She preached Jesus to them and they got delivered from drugs, crime and prostitution.

Many of those who got saved by the Lord are still Christians today. She helped many get jobs and houses for those who were sleeping on the streets. The Holy Spirit responds promptly to Jackie's prayers by filling hearts who were once inhabited by the evil one.

I heard Jackie Pullinger speak once at my old Church in Liverpool. When she told us her story, everyone was quiet.

Jackie Pullinger went all the way to Hong Kong to tell people about Jesus. She is still there today. Someday, I know some of us will go to far away places to tell people about Jesus too. But first, we have to tell our friends and neighbours that Jesus loves them. And it isn't enough to just tell them, we must reveal Jesus' character to them through our every day lives; by being kind to them for example. Then, they will see that Jesus really loves them.

Our missionary work must begin from our own Jerusalem! It is only then that God will have the trust in us as to send us to the uttermost parts of the world; like He did Jackie Pullinger.
